Thompson Island Outward Bounds core mission is to build stronger, more equitable school communities by delivering free experiential learning programs that boost academic success and foster personal growth. Our research-based programs blend STEM, social-emotional, and challenge-based learning, giving students a unique opportunity to build life skills alongside academic ones.
Whom do we serve (students, clients, customers)
We offer programs for Boston Public School middle school and high school students, fee-for-service programs for school and youth groups, and leadership development programs for professionals. We also fund our transformational programs by hosting private and corporate events and weddings.
POSITION SUMMARY
Wash and sanitize small wares and kitchen equipment. Support the food and beverage needs for the Cathleen Stone Island Outward Bound School (CSIOBS) by cleaning and maintaining all food prep and service areas.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Follow all safety and cleanliness standards set by Executive Chef and Sous Chef.
Washing china, glass, silver, and small wares.
Maintaining a clean and organized dish area.
Regularly sweep and mop dining hall and kitchen
Organize and clean cooking utensils and supplies prior to and after preparing meals.
Assist in maintaining clean food line with professional presentation of food for the duration of each meal.
Clean food line and dining area following the meal, storing leftover food in line with CSIOBS food storage systems and Massachusetts Board of Health regulations.
Wash and shelve dishes, utensils and serving materials.
Taking out trash and recycling.
Assist in transporting food orders from the dock to the kitchen.
Stock food storage areas as well as assist in keeping those areas clean and organized.
Communicate professionally with guests and staff, answering questions and facilitating a pleasant dining experience.
Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Willing to practice, clarify, and hold themselves and others accountable to cleanliness procedures.
Ability to follow direction.
Able to maintain professional communication.
WORK CONDITIONS
Willingness to take a 25 minute boat ride to and from Cathleen Stone Island as part of the daily commute.
Willingness to work in hot and/or cold temperatures outside per the season.
Ability to work non-traditional hours to include early mornings, late nights and weekend work.
Willingness to stay over on Thompson Island when required.
This position requires a criminal background check.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to remain on feet and/or stay active for 8+ hours per day.
All positions reporting hours to the island, are asked to assist loading/unloading cargo from the boat as able. This involves lifting and walking with parcels upwards of 50 lbs on and off moving docks and up/down ramps.
